St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is usually associated with plentiful libations and the wearing of green. However it wasn’t until the 1970s that pubs in Ireland were open on March 17. In addition, St. Patrick was never associated with the color green, but with dark blue. The custom of wearing green came from Ireland being known as the Emerald Isle, the Irish flag shares the color, and the importance of being invisible to Leprechauns who will pinch anyone they can see (they can’t see the color green).
