While every vacation can offer opportunities to add a new chapter to your love story, these are our favorite destinations for romance.
It’s the smallest of the Leeward Islands in the Dutch Caribbean but visitors return again and again for the favorable climate (average temperature is 82 degrees) and excellent location outside the tropical hurricane zone. The brilliant blue skies, virtually rain-free days and abundant sunshine mirror the welcoming atmosphere and extra-friendly locals. It’s the perfect setting for courting and sparking in the sun—or under cover of the night.
You can share an adventure in windsurfing, parasailing, snorkeling or scuba diving, and explore the clear crystalline waters, watching colonies of picturesque coral reefs, Spotted Goatfish, Four Eye Butterflies, Black Bar Soldiers, Yellow Damsels, Rock Beauties and Sea Cucumbers and other sf exotic fish and aquatic life.
Or just laze the day away and work on your tans, sipping cool umbrella drinks while holding hands and watching the ocean waves wax and wane. Bluegreen’s La Cabana Beach Resort & Casino faces one of the world’s most popular beaches, Aruba’s Eagle Beach, a perfect destination for lovers and others, including family members.
Play tennis or racquetball. Work up a healthy sweat in the state-of-the-art fitness center with free weights, cardio machines or aerobics classes. For a less strenuous experience, chill out in the shade of a cabana at the oceanside pool, or treat yourself and your significant other to a massage and facial at the spa. While you two enjoy your togetherness, the rest of the family can have fun at the resort’s playground and game room, play a round of mini-golf or join in the daily supervised group activities. Car rental and babysitting services are available, too, if the two of you want to get away from the family for more couple’s fun.
Big Bear Lake, California
The magnificent mountains of Southern California are famous for their towering forests and for many people, the scent of fresh pine and the awesome location—7,000 feet above sea level—make for a stimulating and romantic getaway. The Club at Big Bear Village can be your headquarters for romance, relaxation and rejuvenation. Become a couple again and share a hike in the San Bernardino Mountains or a long workout in the private fitness center. Enjoy horseback riding, kayaking and water skiing or take a helicopter tour. At the end of the day, an outdoor heated pool provides a place to splash and wind down to the evening’s activities.
The area boasts a vibrant nightlife, with nightclubs, restaurants, dance clubs, craft breweries—even a bar with a 16-lane bowling alley. Kick back and have some fun. Share good times together. What could be more romantic?
St. Augustine, Fl
It may be America’s original city but everything old is new again when you’re in love. Filled with quaint restaurants, taverns, shops and more, St. Augustine’s cobblestone streets will take you back over the centuries. Visit the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park or the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, once the city’s defense fort. The Lightner Museum’s collection of shrunken heads and mummies will make your honey want to get a little closer and the beach at Anastasia State Park is one of the most romantic spots in the world.
Are you golfers? If not, taking lessons together can be a great bonding experience. If you already know your way around the links, World Golf Village is a year-round golfer’s paradise. Two championship 18-hole courses—one designed by Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer and the other with input from Sam Snead and Gene Sarazen—are home to the World Golf Hall of Fame; the 30,000-foot, two-story PGA Tour Stop store; high-tech swing instruction; and more.
Dining in St. Augustine is superb, with old-school romantic eateries, modern fusion restaurants and more casual café’s, each providing an ideal setting for the passion of food.
Smoky Mountains, Tennessee
With a name like Pigeon Forge, you might not think of this Smoky Mountain area as a romantic destination, but love is all around. By spending some magical time together at Bluegreen’s Laurel Crest™ resort, your moribund relationship could become thoroughly reinvigorated.
Begin by reserving an intimate a corner booth at Bullfish Grill for a delicious country-style dinner. Top it off with the house specialty dessert, coconut cream pie, accompanied, perhaps, with an aperitif or other after-dinner drink. How about a romantic nature-lover’s picnic? Grab a blanket and head to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Porter Creek Trail is the perfect spot for a quiet romantic picnic. Before you go, order a pair of tasty box lunches with delicious sandwiches on artisan bread, healthy fresh fruit and decadent chocolate cake from the Pottery House Cafe and Grill in Old Mill Square.
Enjoy a tranquil walk along the banks of Little Pigeon River or visit the waterwheel of the Old Mill, a picturesque setting for sightseeing and photography. Or, you can get the blood pumping by racing go-karts in the dark or zooming down the side of a hill inside a spinning hydro globe in a wet “Zorb” ride.
The romantic allure of art, culture and craft can be yours in nearby Gatlinburg. Stroll along the historic Riverwalk and browse the souvenirs you’ll treasure for years to come. Travel through the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail past lush forests along a secluded one-way paved road, stopping at picnic spots and scenic creeks. If you’re early risers, rise and shine up to the top of Clingman’s Dome for sunrise above the Smokies that you’ll never forget. Make more memories at the top of Mt. Harrison for spectacular views, or take a two-seater Sky Lift or Space Needle elevator to enjoy a scenic Smokies tableau that will last a lifetime in your romantic recollections.
